At Equity Energies, we’ve introduced Carbon Admissions with one goal in mind – to spark open, honest conversations about what we know, and more importantly, what we don’t know about reaching Net Zero.

We’re all too aware of the barriers that are stalling progress on Net Zero within UK organisations, including scrutiny, fear of decision-making repercussions, accountability, greenwashing, and a lack of internal support. These hurdles are contributing to what is often called ‘greenstalling’—where despite good intentions, momentum towards decarbonisation slows.

What’s more, the pressure to deliver on Net Zero goals is taking its toll on the job satisfaction of those tasked with driving the change. While the shift to a low-carbon economy is creating new green jobs, the weight of responsibility is becoming a burden for many, dampening their sense of ambition and fulfilment.

Carbon Admissions campaign cover

Carbon Admissions is more than a campaign – it’s a reminder that the path to Net Zero is a winding, ever-changing one. Every organisation’s journey will be unique, evolving alongside operational needs. This requires constant learning, embracing new technologies, and perhaps most importantly being unafraid to admit what we don’t know. In fact, admitting gaps in knowledge is the first step toward building the confidence needed to make meaningful progress.

As the full title of the campaign states, “We don’t know what we don’t know”—and that’s okay! Asking questions is the catalyst for change, and it’s the first step toward unlocking progress.

“Prior to working in the industry, I didn’t realise that carbon hangs around in our atmosphere for between 300 to 1,000 years.”

Ryan O’Neill, Chief Strategy Officer at Equity Energies

Whether it’s making your own Carbon Admission or using our Pathway to Progress model for inspiration, starting a conversation today could be the most important step toward a more sustainable future.

My own Carbon Admission? Before joining the industry, I wasn’t aware that carbon lingers in the atmosphere for anywhere between 300 to 1,000 years. The emissions we produce today will impact generations to come, underscoring the urgency of reducing our carbon impact right now. The actions we take today matter more than ever.
