We’re now called Equity Energies. We’ve got a sharp new logo; the office meeting rooms have been repainted in our new brand colours and we had a brilliant party for the team to celebrate the change.

So why Equity Energies. It’s just a name, right?

You could be forgiven for thinking so. But our new name is symbolic of two important things. One, the change that is happening within our own organisation because we believe a different approach is needed if we are to collectively achieve Net Zero. And two, because the right way forward is an equitable one.

Equality or equity?

Of the varied meanings of the word ‘equity’, it’s perhaps easiest to explain in the context of equality.

If equality is giving everyone new trainers, equity is making sure each pair of trainers actually fits. Without that, the first step taken on your jog, let alone the marathon that follows, isn’t going to feel very good.

It’s the same when it comes to organisations embarking on the journey to Net Zero. We know there is no one-size-fits-all Net Zero solution, yet there’s still an expectation that people and the organisations they represent can easily choose a path and stick to it, even when they’re being bombarded with information and options, each claiming to be the silver bullet.

Just grab the first pair of trainers you see and get running. What could possibly go wrong?

For most, the desire to start moving and to speed up is there; it’s the fear of failure by taking the wrong first step, wearing the wrong pair of shoes, that makes it feel like you’ve hit the wall before you’ve even started.

Greenstalling by default.

“For any Net Zero pathway to be a success, it must be equitable – designed and implemented in a way that responds to each organisation’s own unique requirements.”

Take your first, or next, step.

That’s why it’s been a conscious choice for us to use equity as part of the name for our relaunched business. It embodies our vision for every organisation in the UK to be on and advancing its own pathway to Net Zero, while also reflecting the wider range of decarbonisation solutions available now that we’re part of the wider DCC Energy Group

For any Net Zero pathway to be a success, it must be equitable – designed and implemented in a way that responds to each organisation’s own unique requirements. And when those requirements change, or the options available to support progress evolve, the pathway needs to change too.

It’s worth getting it right. Just like any runner will tell you, once you start to feel the benefits, it’s hard to stop. The right Net Zero pathway unlocks commercial, environmental and societal value, and becomes an ongoing catalyst for organisational performance.

You only have to take your next step.

Energy equity for all.

Progress on Net Zero shouldn’t be reserved for large corporates, or only for those organisations with the scale, investment and resources to make a sizeable difference. Success will come when every organisation in the UK is able to move things forward, in a way that matches their unique requirements, and which unlocks all the come from action.

Equality through equity? Now that’s something worth tying your laces up for.
