The client
Barnsley Premier Leisure is a community leisure charitable trust that operate health and fitness facilities across Barnsley, Bassetlaw, Mansfield, and Pontefract. These facilities include leisure centres, swimming pools, gyms, and golf courses. The facilities play an important role in improving the mental and physical health of the local community.
The relationship
BPL and Equity Energies started working together in 2023 with the goal of helping BPL advance along its Net Zero pathway and reduce energy costs. With energy being a significant operational cost, the ability to understand energy consumption at a circuit level was of critical importance. BPL realised the potential impact MY ZEERO and the actionable insights it would deliver as it looked to reduce not only their energy costs but also their carbon emissions.
The solution
We worked with BPL to identify where MY ZEERO would have the most impact across their sites. We agreed on an initial installation plan of 41 eMeters across BPL’s six highest energy consuming sites, measuring 392 data points. The focus of these MY ZEERO installations were:
- Identify areas of energy waste such as unnecessary out-of-hours consumption.
- Identify trends and anomalies in consumption patterns, which could then be used to improve operational processes at each site.
- Implement an alert system on all key equipment to highlight when consumption patterns fell outside of expected norms.
- Identify opportunities for further energy efficiency solutions, either technological or behavioural.
Once the eMeters had been installed and commissioned, we then set up the client on the MY ZEERO portal so that they could view the energy consumption data of each site in real time. After six weeks of collecting energy data, we completed an initial ‘Insight and Observation’ report. This outlined current consumption trends and highlighted quick wins that BPL could action to help bring down Out of Hours consumption. An example of this would be implementing changes to the BMS to ensure HVAC machines were turned on at optimal times.
Following this initial report, our Data and Insights team meets monthly with BPL to review the impact of any changes that have been actioned. We also deliver a monthly ‘Insights’ report which includes opportunities to optimise the energy efficiency of each site.
“Installing MY ZEERO and the expert analysis and insights from the team at Equity Energies helped us identify further areas within our portfolio where we could reduce energy consumption.”

The results
- £5,400 potential annual saving by consistently turning off gym equipment overnight at one location*.
- 41 eMeters measuring 392 data points in real time.
- £8,400 potential annual saving on HVAC energy costs at one location by changing timings by 1 hour in the morning and afternoon*.
- Site Managers now have visibility of their energy consumption in real time, allowing them implement changes to building systems.
- Actionable insights have helped drive improved energy behaviours across the organistion.
- BPL have set up energy focus groups to target areas for reducing energy consumption.
